Restaurants and bars are very limited and are open at certain times only, have to be booked in advance or close out of the tourist season, so please call them to see if they are open before you go. Some food can be ordered if you ask a local person and real Barbudan specialities like land turtle, deer meat, crabs and conchs are only available at certain times and harder to find, so if you are there at the right time at a food fair or event - you are in luck. Fresh caught fish depends on good sea-faring weather and is often sold on the street. Most Barbudan food is sold early in the day and gone by the afternoon so don't miss out by looking too late, or buy it early and save it for later.
Barbuda Outback is right on the beach at Low Bay, a spectacular fourteen mile stretch of pink and white sand between the sparkling Caribbean sea and the healing waters of Codrington Lagoon. Byron can be found at the kiosk at the Lagoon wharf most days, serving hot dogs, burgers, fish and chips, popcorn, ice cream and traditional breakfasts at the weekend. He serves beer and wine in the cool Lagoon breeze, often playing great music from soul to soca, reggae and jazz. At Olice's restaurant you can eat delicious proper local home-made Barbudan food such as stewed pork, rosemary chicken, grilled lobster, fish and souse. Olice is open every day except Monday, from 4.30pm until late and at weekends from 10am. On Sunday she cooks lunch. Call Olice on (268) 772-0480.
On the main road to River, Extra Man aka Evans Bar is a popular drinking and loud music spot especially after horse-racing and other events. Noisy and sometimes rowdy it's now one of the only places left to go for a drink.
The Lyme was a bar and late night dance club and currently sometimes open on Friday nights, some Sundays, special occasions and as a Mas Tent for Caribana.
This bar serves a selection of wines, soft drinks, beers and spirits here in the centre of the village at Madison. Karaoke is here on Thursday night, you can also buy snacks during the day..
Probably the best known of Barbuda's restaurants and bars, Uncle Roddy's is located right on the beach at Coral Group bay on Barbuda, next to Barbuda Cottages. Recently he has renovated and enlarged the space and it's now possible to moor your boat right outside. Uncle Roddy's is Barbuda's first and only 100% solar powered restaurant - and is most famous for grilled Barbudan lobster. But a new chef now cooks delicious grilled fish and other dishes, all accompanied by lovely side dishes including sweet potato fries, rice and peas, salads and vegetables. If you are on a boat you can now moor just off the beach here - following the marker buoys recently set out. Reservations are required to ensure availability so please call first on (268) 722-3050
Street food is very good on Barbuda. At both schools just before break-time you can buy delicious home-made snacks like bread pudding, roti, meatballs, fried chicken and meat or vegetable patties. There may be fried fish and johnny cakes outside Canutes shop on a Friday or Saturday lunchtime and Wanda will be selling the best ribs, chicken and burgers at her new venue by the Duck Pond most days. Jerk Man has a central village stall selling various things including stews and Jamaican style jerk pork and chicken. You can buy roti from Marcia at her home at Roti Queen just off Madison Square. The Block Club and the churches do breakfast events and there are others who sell from various places in the village at different times. If you are cooking; local meat (mainly pork or beef) is often sold from a table in the village, is much cheaper and better quality than the imported frozen meat and sells out fast. If you are looking for Barbudan goat, lamb or deer meat you can often only buy from people you know. Fresh fish is often sold out of a cool box or barrow carried around the village but don't buy undersize or prohibited fish, or lobster and conchs out of season. There is a council vegetable 'market' but this is only open when there is produce to sell, which is not every day. Fancy's shop makes a point of selling locally produced vegetables and fruit when it's available.
We make our own fruit punches and other local drinks like soursop and passion fruit and there is often fresh coconut water to buy. The bars serve our local beers - Wadadali and Carib - as well as Heineken or whatever else is available. Antigua produces its own rums - Cavalier and English Harbour and you can buy wine and some cocktails in the village for about a quarter of the price of one in a hotel. The ArtCafe does cocktail happy hours on some Friday evenings 7 - 9pm and Caribbean rum tasting evenings if you want to learn more about the making and blending of Caribbean rums.
